Our Story

Our History

Yachtwrights is owned and operated by Sean Brown, whose extensive experience in composite construction and repair spans over 25 years.

Sean’s professional journey began in 2000 on the South Coast of New South Wales, where he started an apprenticeship with the renowned sail yacht builder, Sydney Yachts. During his time there, Sean received comprehensive training in all aspects of fibreglass production vessel construction and contributed to a variety of production sailboat models, including the Sydney 38’, 39’, and 47’.

In 2006, Sean took on a leadership role in the construction of five prepreg carbon fibre Martin 49’ yachts and was also involved in the creation of two custom carbon fibre vessels: S.Y. Vanguard and S.Y. Coal Ila.

Following the closure of Sydney Yachts in 2009, Sean worked with several smaller composite construction and repair companies. He contributed to numerous refit, refurbishment, and repair projects for existing vessels, as well as the construction of two Reichel Pugh-designed 40’ carbon fibre racers, S.Y. Equinox II and S.Y. Black Diamond (formerly Blackjack).

In 2011, Sean relocated to China to join the prestigious yacht builder McConaghy Boats at their Zhuhai-based production facility.

Over the course of his tenure there, Sean oversaw the construction of a wide range of projects, including the IRC 52’ prepreg carbon fibre racer, S.Y. Highland Fling X, as well as multiple Carkeek and Botin-designed 40’ prepreg carbon fibre racers. He also managed the production of Mach 2 hydrofoiling moths, the MC38, and the Kerr 46’ production lines, in addition to complex architectural projects such as the composite radar dome for the Hong Kong International Cruise Terminal.

In 2013, Sean returned to Australia to assist Sunshine Coast-based builder Cure Composites with two major custom yacht projects: the Schonning-designed 60’ catamarans S.Y. Tully II and S.Y. Zero.

In 2016, Sean once again ventured overseas to manage the composite construction and repair division of a prominent Australian-owned yacht painting company operating throughout Asia and Europe. His technical expertise provided the business with a competitive advantage, allowing him to oversee a variety of structural repair and refit projects while collaborating directly with OEM builders, designers, surveyors, and private motor yacht owners.

Most recently, Sean has spent the past five years overseeing the construction of the custom 70’ catamaran, S.Y. Noire, as well as developing the production lines for Cure Marine’s exciting new model, the Cure 55’.

With 25 years of continuous experience in composite construction and repair, Sean now embarks on the next chapter of his career, launching Yachtwrights to serve the Southeast Queensland marine industry.
